Artist Showcase: Illustrator, Painter + Muralist Patrick Maxcy

"Chasing Echoes" acrylic on canvas. I love rhinos and would love to see one in the wild. I watched several documentaries on the illegal ivory trade around the world. I had just finished a mural of orcas while in Alaska and had an idea of them swimming around, speaking to each other via echolocation while protecting rhinos from poachers. They would never be together but the visual concept and world in which they would be together was something I had to create. Hummingbirds are also close to my heart. So I loved the idea of one feeling majestic while keeping watch atop the rhinos horn. —Patrick Maxcy

I did a month-long artist residency in Homer, Alaska, and painted 5 different murals around the town while there. I saw an abandoned boat and really got inspired. The old rusting boat is one of 15+ boats owned by Bob, who’s lived on the Homer Spit (on the Kenai Peninsula) for many years. According to old folklore, the area is known as the Devilfish Bog, where large kraken and creatures once came in during a tsunami. This was the perfect location for the large octopus I wanted to quickly paint alongside one of the old boats. —Patrick Maxcy

“Welcome Home” acrylic painting on canvas. I use various animals to tell a specific narrative. I love seeing different animals working together with a common goal. For this piece I wanted it to relate to the phrase “home is where you make it.” If you travel and move you always take parts of your past and home with you. There's a lot personal references and hidden meaning for me within this piece. —Patrick Maxcy

I was hired by Denver Arts & Venues to create a piece on the Ruby Hill Public pool house. The pool house had often been vandalized before the mural and they wanted to brighten up the area. I painted the building with a large jellyfish on one side and a large octopus wrapping around the building on the other side. I used blue graphic shapes to give the piece some movement and a more modern feel. —Patrick Maxcy

"Departure" acrylic on canvas. I created this piece in reference to honey bees and great white sharks being added to the endangered species list. I loved the idea of seeing them together because it would never happen. This piece was part of a show in Hawaii with the nonprofit ocean conservation organization PangeaSeed. —Patrick Maxcy

This piece I recently painted for the Fort Collins Project. I had a sketch I did years ago that I wanted to see painted on a large scale. I love seeing various animals working together for a specific goal. It often takes on a fun image that makes people smile. I love having the viewer create that dialog and storyline. —Patrick Maxcy
